Totally Electric Science Conference & Exposition
Hosted by UNM-Valencia Campus

Department of Homeland Security,

Sandia Labs, Los Lunas Schools, UNM-Valencia team up

Los Lunas sixth and eighth graders will be on the UNM-Valencia Campus for a three-day science conference and exposition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Entitled “Totally Electric,” the fair will take place in the campus’ Student-Community Center, Oct. 15-17, 2008.

The focus of this fair is on electricity, and the purpose is to get young students excited about science and technology. With the U.S. population aging, the country does not have enough young people interested in the sciences to replace scientists and engineers as they retire.

A light show, sponsored by General Atomics, will be a featured exhibit at the fair. Students will also have the opportunity to visit exhibits from 20 regional firms that will show these students that many aspects of science and engineering are being researched and developed in the southwest.

Los Lunas Schools’ In STEP program is providing the students for the fair, but a public show and exhibit is planned for Thursday, October 16, at 7 p.m. This exhibit is free to the general public, and homeschooled children are welcome to attend it.

A teachers’ workshop is also scheduled for Oct. 18 on the UNM-Valencia Campus. Other sponsors of the fair include Sandia National Laboratories/Lockheed Martin and Envisioneering, Inc.
