Program Description
The pharmacy technician certificate program is designed to prepare students for careers as pharmacy technicians
in hospital, retail, mail order pharmacies, and other pharmacy-related industries. In the 12 month program, students
receive classroom, laboratory and practical experience covering all aspects of the profession. A 45-hour contentspecific
block of instruction dealing with the preparation of sterile intravenous products as required by the New
Mexico Board of Pharmacy, is included in the laboratory portion of the program.
Career and Educational Advancement Opportunities
Pharmacy technician programs in New Mexico have a high placement rate for graduates. Jobs are available in
hospitals, retail, and specialty pharmacies. Graduates are eligible to sit for the national certification exam (PTCB
exam) for Pharmacy Technicians. Students planning to continue their education at UNM’s College of Pharmacy
should consider enrolling in the Associate of Applied Science in Pharmacy Technician Program.

Total credit hours required: 34 (6 hours of general education and 28 hours of program-specific courses).
