Associate of Applied Science in Pharmacy Technician
Program Description
The associate of applied science in pharmacy technician program is designed to prepare students for careers as
pharmacy technicians in hospital, retail, mail order pharmacies, and other pharmacy-related industries with additional
preparation in mathematics, biology, chemistry and physics—courses which give the student a more thorough
preparation and which can also be applied as requirements for admission to UNM’s College of Pharmacy.
During the second year of the program, students receive classroom, laboratory and practical experience covering
all aspects of the profession. Included in the laboratory portions of the program is a 45-hour content-specific block
of instruction dealing with the preparation of sterile intravenous products as required by the New Mexico Board of
Pharmacy.
Career and Educational Advancement Opportunities
Pharmacy technician programs in New Mexico have a high placement rate for graduates. Jobs are available in
hospitals, retail, and specialty pharmacies. Graduates are eligible to sit for the national certification exam (PTCB
exam) for Pharmacy Technicians.
Program Requirements
Total credit hours required: 68 (40 hours of general education courses and 28 hours of program-specific courses).
